Ah, at long last, I have caught up with this series. I just finished playing all eight games the other day, too. End was my favorite one, and I'm glad to see that the manga adaptation did it justice. The facial expressions were as demented as ever, bringing out the cruelty in the witches' hearts very well. I also noticed some extra clues sprinkled about here and there throughout the art - one particular one was a MAJOR hint at Beatrice's true identity, lurking behind a seemingly innocuous line of dialogue.Anyway, as for the story, End is fantastic. The witches' game board, devoid of love, has driven Natsuhi into a corner. Dlanor continues to be second best seacat (first being, of course, Lady Lambdadelta) and a formidable foe. I was impressed with the battle scenes in the VN, and the manga pulls them off very well too. Yes, there are times where this volume gets wordy. VERY wordy. Like, might-as-well-be-a-novel wordy. But anyone who's stuck around this long should be prepared for that. Plus, the mystery is very well fleshed out.As usual, though, the main drawback to this volume is the lack of color. For obvious publishing reasons, it's unreasonable to expect actual red or blue text for the red and blue truths, requiring the use of a different font instead, but the two-page golden truth spread lost quite a bit of impact because it was in black and white. Out of all the scenes in all eight episodes, this is the one that deserves color the most. However, it's pointless to complain about this when there's nothing that can be done about it. And it certainly doesn't change the fact that this is an amazing series.Since End was the high point of the series for me, Dawn will probably seem lackluster by comparison. But hey - I hear the manga adaptation of Twilight improves on the game quite a bit. I look forward to seeing that.
