For me, Moon Knight is one of those characters I'll always associate with one writer; later iterations have never quite captured his distinctive qualities the way that Doug Moench did. Just as he did with Master of Kung Fu—or Steve Gerber did with Man-Thing & Howard the Duck, or Jack Kirby with the New Gods & the Eternals—Moench brought something deeply personal to his work here, a uniquely individual vision that gave it real power & emotional impact.And it was done most effectively in concert with artist Bill Sienkiewicz. Together they gave us stories that captured the darkness & fractured society of the 1970s to perfection, with a flawed hero (almost anti-hero) seeking redemption for a sordid past. Combining the Shadow-like pulp elements of Moon Knight's supporting cast of aides/friends with psychological, often symbolic melodrama & the loss of political faith & certainty of the era, Moench gave us something far more than the sum of its originally derivative parts.The last few stories, when other writers take over & the series takes a more supernatural turn, are not as strong. On their own terms, they're certainly well-crafted & enjoyable; but this isn't the Moon Knight that Moench depicted in all those gripping issues previously. But even those stories are leagues ahead of what's been done to the character in subsequent decades. In many ways, I wish that the character had been left alone after Moench departed … but of course that was never going to happen.In the three volumes that collect the Moench years, we have the strongest & most compelling version of Moon Knight, at least to my mind. Later versions upped the madness & graphic violence, while losing too much of the troubled but striving humanity that drove the character. It's all a matter of taste, of course: but as I said, for me, this is the definitive version of the character, and I'm grateful to have these fine stories collected at last. Great stuff from Marvel's most experimental & creative era, highly recommended! Moon Knight has been my second favorite hero after Spider-Man ever since I was a kid. He's a cooler "Batman type" hero. The multiple personalities give him a depth that no other character has in Marvel or DC. I bought the 1st 2 Epic Collections even though I have all the comics but I hate reading mint condition books when I can read a tpb without worrying abt damaging a valuable comic. Marvel has hit a homerun with these collections, I just keep buying them. I also love the extra behind the scenes stories from the bullpen, the scans of the original 11x17 pencil art, and the bonus stories that may have been in a marvel magazine or another title (Moon Knight had a lot of stories in the 1970s Hulk magazine).
